Three Red Flags in a Severance Package

A severance offer is a starting point for negotiation, not a final answer. Here are three things worth double-checking before you sign.

First, check whether the offer accounts for your actual length of service, including time with a predecessor company if your employer was acquired.

Second, look for a tight deadline pressuring you to sign quickly — that alone is worth a second opinion.

Third, check what happens to bonuses, commissions, and benefits during the notice period; these are often understated in a first offer.
